Liberal Arts Education in the News

This recent article in time magazine discusses the value of a liberal arts education compared to one focused on science and technology.  The lively discussion that follows in the comments section  indicates how strongly people feel about this subject, and what different lenses they use to  focus on the value and importance of undergraduate education.  With the cost of college increasing dramatically in recent years, as discussed in the recent issue of The American Scholar, it is easy to focus on the immediate financial success of graduates in terms of employment.  However, as the article in The Scholar reminds us, Jefferson and his contemporaries considered public education as necessary for the health of our democracy, not  just a means to employ-ability.
